Ant species
There are species of ants that are popular in British Colombia, including the carpenter ant, the odorous house ant, fire ant and the pavement ant. The European fire ant swarms rapidly when disturbed, and stings. Unfortunately it likes to live in lawns and gardens.
Carpenter ants
Carpenter ants are the largest ants found in British Columbia. Their color varies from black, brown and black, red and black, to light brown depending on the species. Their colonies can live from 3 to 7 years with colonies ranging in size from 3,000 workers, to 25,000 ants in mature colonies. They can cause significant damage to homes and other structures, and should be exterminated at the earliest signs of infestation.
Pavement ants
Pavement ants, on the other hand, are brown in color. Their name is derived from its habit of nesting in the soil next to and beneath slabs, patios, sidewalks, and driveways. It is quite easy to find colonies thanks to the fact that they always pile soils either on top of or next to pavements.
Pharaoh ants
Pharaoh ants are very small and yellow in color. They require artificial heat in order to survive and reproduce and tend to live in large heated buildings such as hospitals, hotels and blocks of flats.

Settlements
Moisture and rotting wood or soft sandy soils are perfect conditions for ants to thrive. One of the main reasons as to why the ants multiply so easy is undoubtedly their social structure. Every ant colony efficiently functions as a super organism, with all individuals working for the common good of the colony.
Winged queen ants spill out of their nests to mate and form new colonies. Pharaoh Ants, for instance, originate from the tropics and require artificial heat in order to survive and reproduce.
Nutrition
The dietary necessities of ants change consistently; contingent upon the season and needs of the settlement. It is a myth that carpenter ants actually eat wood. They don’t eat the wood, but they do have strong mandibles and are able to turn a piece of wood into sawdust. They basically feed on insects, insect honeydew, plants and food juices. Indoors Carpenter ants feed on sweet, grease, and meat.
Ant detection
Nests can be readily recognized by the presence of the active workers, accumulations of thatching materials, and sawdust. For some ant species, nests are often discovered only when the wood is broken open. Some ant colonies will nest in any place that will provide protection such as walls, furniture and appliances, inside irons, hollow curtain rods, under roofing shingles and in small boxes to name but a few.
Control Methods
Ant control can be quite hectic for homeowners. Pharaoh ants, for example, can be very difficult to control and eliminate. When foraging worker ants are killed by residual treatments, the colony will fracture or split into two or more colonies to ensure part of the colony survives. If such treatments are continued, the infestation is spread throughout the building. Pharaoh ants naturally establish themselves in moisturized places like kitchens or bathrooms. They move from one room to the other room within the walls using electrical wires and plumbing pipes.
